Cleanings

A young boy sits in the dentist's chair looking in a mirror at his teeth. His mother holds his hand while the dentist points to his teeth.

We generally recommend a dental cleaning once every 6 months. Your dentist or hygienist may recommend additional visits if you have periodontal or other issues. During a cleaning, your dentist or dental assistant will perform a variety of preventive and diagnostic services, including X-Rays and examination, gum tissue evaluation, plaque and tartar removal, polishing and brushing, sealant application, and more.

Does A Cleaning Hurt?

If you or your child brush and floss twice per day, it is unlikely you will feel any discomfort. Your dentist or hygienist will also perform a diagnostic exam to determine the cause of any gum or tooth pain you may be experiencing.

Who performs the dental cleaning?

Most cleanings are performed by your dental hygienist. Before a cleaning, your hygienist will perform an exam paying close attention to your gums. If your hygienist finds anything out of the ordinary, they will call the dentist before they continue with the cleaning.
